come on, enough with trotting out these cliches about the 'evil labels'. sure, the majors are a really bad joke, but you're not talking about downloading their music. most of the indies i've encountered are funded and staffed by good honest people.

and would you even want to download this music if someone hadn't gone to the trouble of trawling through the demo pile, picking the 1-in-a-thousand that are half decent, giving them a platform to develop and then telling the world about them.

there's a great site with 100% legal free music, it's called myspace. but i would rather pay £7 for an album than trawl through all this godawful toss spewed out by an army of tryhard wannabes.

btw as someone who's read many contracts, when you buy a record on emusic or bleep or juno or any of the other indie-friendly music services artists make _at least_ as much as the label, and the shop takes basically a sliver. records and cds are expensive because making them and keeping them in warehouses and shipping them is expensive. especially in the case of your low-volume underground music.

so your moral highground is a little wobbly.

oh and the idea of donating to artists is lovely, what a fuzzy feeling. apart from the mountains of social experiments to show that people are true to their monkey origins and will by and large take what they can get for free. this is why society, the rule of law and specifically intellectual property law are all necessary.

"Wake up, record labels."

They are awake.

"And if they’re willing to donate to it, chances are they’re willing to give to artists too. "

Yes, this very well may be true. Most down loaders would prob. give artists money! But that is NOT what the label wants! No WAY! Because? The Label want your money! Once they get it, they can put the Artist in a limo with a full bar and a chump change check and drive 'em off into the hollywood sunset.
